Because these injuries look and feel similar to ordinary bone bruises or overuse pain, they’re one of the most under-recognized injury categories among parents and even some coaches and left untreated, they carry real risk of affecting long-term bone growth.
Bone stress injuries linked to growth plates most often affect the tibia, accounting for somewhere between 19% and 54% of reported cases depending on the study, with running heavy and jumping heavy sports showing the highest concentration. A pattern parents of track, basketball, and soccer athletes in particular should know about.
What Growth Plates Are, and Why Adolescence Is the Highest-Risk Window?
Growth plates are areas of developing cartilage near the ends of long bones where growth happens. Until they fully close typically in the mid to late teens they’re weaker than the surrounding mature bone and tendon, making them uniquely vulnerable to repetitive stress.
Growing Pains or Something More?
Ordinary growing pains tend to be a dull, intermittent ache, often at night, that isn’t tied to a specific activity. A genuine growth plate injury usually presents as localized pain that worsens with a specific movement or sport activity and doesn’t improve with rest over several days,that pattern deserves evaluation.
Which Sports Carry Elevated Risk
Repetitive running and jumping sports like track, basketball, soccer, and gymnastics carry elevated risk simply due to repeated impact loading on the same growth plate over a season.
Nutrition’s Role in Healthy Growth Plates
Adequate calcium, vitamin D, and overall caloric intake to match training volume all support bone development during the years growth plates are most vulnerable. Young athletes who are under fueled relative to their training load. Common in sports with an aesthetic or weight class component face elevated risk of bone stress injuries on top of the normal risks of adolescence.
